The impact of Corona on animals around India. What does it mean for us and them?

With the strict lockdowns imposed, people have to stay indoors. The animals living on the streets who relied on restaurants, shops and other friendly people passing by are now left without their main source of food.

Hunger means more fights

As food becomes scarce, animals have to fight over the little they have. This leads some to wander out of their usual territory and enter the territory that's viciously guarded by the animals of that territory. Violent fights are not uncommon and sadly some animals even lose their lives.

In some parts of India, dogs formed large packs and hunted chickens and even pigs that belonged to village and towns people, who then (understandably) retaliated against the dogs. However, the use of poison to punish the dogs is definitely too extreme.

Fortunately, as it became more apparent that something needed to be done. The Uttarakhand government allowed people feeding animals to break the lockdown rules and go to various locations to provide food. These kind-hearted people have definitely saved the lives of many hungry animals.

Wild Animals

On the other hand, wild animals thrived during the lockdowns. The lack of human interference in nature not only helped the environment but allowed wild animals to roam their territory freely and even enter the outskirts of our cities. A variety of birds, not normally seen in these areas were photographed in the trees in the middle of the cities. Elephants, leopards, various deer and even a rare civet were also caught on camera.

It's amazing how quickly and beautifully nature can recover when left alone!

What can you do?

If you're in a position to help feed stray animals, whether it's dogs, cows or monkeys, then please do so. Always remember to be cautious around animals you don't know. Remember that water is just as important as food and many animals, especially during the hot seasons, don't have access to any, so putting out containers of water will also help save animals.
